Abstract
Primary hyperparathyroidism is one of the most frequent endocrinological diseases. The incidence increases with age and postmenopausal status. It is characterized by hypersecretion of parathyroid hormone from the parathyroid glands. Diagnosis is made by demonstrating increased parathyroid hormone, resulting in increased calcium and decreased serum phosphate. The clinical manifestations occur mainly at the bone, renal, musculoskeletal, gastrointestinal, and neuropsychiatric levels; although a large number of patients today are diagnosed in their asymptomatic stage. Its main etiology is parathyroid adenomas, which represent up to 80-85% of cases. Surgical resection of the parathyroids is the only definitive treatment. For those patients who are not candidates for surgery, medical management allows adequate control of the disease. The importance of health personnel to identify and make a diagnosis of the disease lies in the fact that early diagnosis and timely treatment allows to modify the course of the disease, and significantly improve the patient's quality of life.
