Abstract

Postoperative delirium is the most common cause of complications after surgery in patients over 65 years of age. It manifests as an acute cognitive and attention dysfunction, characterized by being transient and fluctuating. These manifestations are observed in hours or days after a surgical intervention. In recent years it has regained great interest, in part due to the increase in life expectancy in the elderly, thus promoting an increase in the incidence of postoperative delirium, which is why it has been the subject of study, although its pathophysiology is still unclear. Its prevention is key since the pharmacological evidence in management once established is insufficient; In addition, 30-40% of cases can be prevented, this by taking an early approach in correcting modifiable predisposing factors, which is why adequate training of health personnel involved in patient care is important.
