Abstract

Hyperemesis gravidarum is a common condition during the first trimester of pregnancy that results in a high rate of hospitalizations. There is no consensus as to the diagnostic criteria by the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology and other Obstetrics Colleges, however it is a disease characterized by severe nausea and vomiting that can lead to organ damage, without other cause. Primiparous patients, multiple pregnancy and molar pregnancy have a higher risk of presenting hyperemesis gravidarum. Its pathophysiology is unclear and there are several hypotheses in this regard. Its severity is assessed with the PUQE scale and the diagnosis is mostly clinical. Treatment consists of lifestyle changes, non-pharmacological and pharmacological management, which are effective in alleviating symptoms and avoiding the progression of the disease.
