Abstract
Epistaxis is a hemorrhage originating from the nasal cavity and represents one of the most frequent otolaryngological emergencies doctors face in emergency services. Although its presentation is often benign, nasal bleeding can quickly compromise the vital prognosis, due to its recurrence or abundance. Its etiology can be local or systemic, however, in most cases the cause of epistaxis remains idiopathic. A successful approach by the health professional requires knowledge about the nasal anatomy, potential risks and complications of their treatments. The management of epistaxis is often demanding and it should be timely with initial resuscitation measures, nasal compression therapy, cauterization and may even merit surgical resolution in the operating room.
