Abstract
Child sexual abuse is a problem with high prevalence both in Costa Rica and worldwide. It can be presented with changes in behavior, signs outside the physical examination, or be silent and revealed through disclosure by the victim. The doctor and other health personnel must play a number of different roles to address these cases, including diagnosing abuse and ruling out differential diagnoses, informing child protection services, evaluating and treating sexually transmitted infections, providing support and peace of mind to children and their families, as well as to advise parents and children on ways to help keep them safe from sexual abuse. In this way, an integral intervention of the victim and his environment that favors a better prognosis is achieved.
